PJ Gilligan's 1860's Dry Goods Store

Our brooms are handmade by P.J. Gilligan using 19th century equipment. The broom corn is applied to the pole using wire and a nail.

Broom Making Table

Then the broom is placed in a vise to flatten the broom corn. A large metal needle passes string back and forth through the broom corn weaving a pattern to hold the corn in place.

Broom Vise

The corn is trimmed to shape with a flat edge, a tapered edge, or not trimmed at all depending on our customer’s wishes.

Excellent function and durability!
